Working Principle :
The working principle of decanters is based on sedimentation or settling process. Mere settling by gravity is an extremely slow and uncontrolled process. A decanter provides continuous mechanical separation of liquids from solids. Instead of using the force of gravity for separation, centrifugal force, which can be up to 4000 times greater, is used. A wide range of different solids can be separated from one or two liquid phases continuously.
The centrifugal force presses the solid particles outside against a rotating bowl, while the less dense liquid phase forms a concentric inner layer. The solid particles are continuously removed by a screw conveyor, which rotates at a different speed than the bowl. The solids are compacted and discharged from the bowl. Baffles in the centrifuge casing channel the separate phases into the correct flow path.
